China to fund San Ricardo-Surigao “Mega Bridge"

March 11 - 17, 2017

The national government is planning to build a 23-kilometer cable-stayed long span bridge that will connect the province of Southern Leyte and Surigao.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) came up with its project cost as they seek endorsement of the five-year mega projects from the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) for the start of a feasibility study.

NEDA regional office project development investment programming officer Ernesto Octaviano said that the study will be done by Chinese construction experts and project consultants through funding grants from the Chinese government.

“After the approval of technical assistance, the study will run for six months and hopefully construction will start next year,” Octaviano said.

The P101.35 billion Leyte-Surigao project involves the construction of the bridge connecting San Ricardo, Southern Leyte and Lipata in Surigao City, crossing the Surigao Strait to solve the perennial problem of stranding during weather disturbances and ferry port congestion during peak seasons.

A cable-stayed bridge has one or more towers, from which cables support the bridge deck. Distinctive features are the cables, which run directly from the tower to the deck, normally forming a fan-like pattern or a series of parallel lines.

If realized, the mega bridge project will beat the 2.16-kilometer San Juanico Bridge’s title as the “longest bridge” in the Philippines. (By: DAHLIA ORIT)
