Catmon - Southern Leyte’s tarsier lair

July 1 - 7, 2017

SILAGO - The tiny barangay of Catmon is fast becoming known as the tarsier capital of Southern Leyte. According to DENR-8 Regional Director Leonardo Sibbaluca, residents of the barangay have been actively protecting the specie known as the Philippine tarsier (Tarsius syrichta) which is considered as one of
the world's smallest monkeys.

Compared to their counterparts in Bohol, the Southern Leyte tarsiers found in Silago are larger and heavier than their animal cousins. Many local and foreign tourists have visited the farflung barangay in order to catch a glimpse of these small nocturnal monkeys.

Sibbaluca said that the basis for the protection of the tarsier is a resolution passed by the barangay council “instituting the protection and conservation measures of the unique tarsier within its area of responsibility.”

He added that the resolution mandates the barangay to initiate conservation and protection measures for the Southern Leyte tarsier consistent with the Wildlife Act of the Philippines.(By MARK L. RIMAS)
