Calapre is Batang Pinoy's Best Athelete

MAASIN CITY - Fifteen year old Mary Joy Calapre of Barangay Mantahan,  Maasin City was chosen best athlete at the Batang  Pinoy Youth Games National Championship held in Naga City last December 2011. More than 2000 athletes from different regions of the country competed in the competition.

Calapre won the lawn tennis singles championship and doubles crown where she teamed-up with Angelica Mae Baluran. Mary Joy is the daughter of Basilio Cid Calapre was also chosen “Best Athlete in Lawn Tennis” of the National Championship.

With their victories, Calapre and Baluran, are expected to secure slots on the Philippine Team which will see action in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China according to their coach Christopher Plateros.

The competition which was organized by the Philippine Sports Commission aims to strengthen the country’s grassroots sports development program is based on sound values formation and good sportsmanship. Its an open tournament for children 15 years old and younger.

Other medalists from the city were Julirey Vuillahermosa who won a silver medal in boxing and Josh Mark Maquilabit who won a silver medal in the badminton singles competition. The others who brought home bronze medals were Josh Mark Maquilabit and Nequi Joseph Cepada, Alemar Javier, Cesar Bestudio and Joshua Ephraism Lagunay. (Daily Samar News)
