Best Role ModelsAntonio M. Reyes

By Antonio M. Reyes

We’ve always felt that scouting was one of the best ways of educating our young women in the country. For it instills in them the time honored virtues of honesty, prudence, self reliance, self respect and love of country. And it achieves this by providing them with hands on experience on the value of teamwork and a healthy outlook towards nature and wildlife.

Scouting which use to be part of the public school curriculum was dropped by former Education Secretary Raul Roco who felt it took too much of the teacher’s time and replaced it with text book based values formation. This caused a drastic decline in girl scout membership and the dues which the GSP depended on for its camping and other outreach projects.

It is therefore essential for the GSP leadership to convince Education Secretary Armin Luistro on the importance of scouting and to re-install it in the primary and high school curriculum.

The GSP Chapter in Southern Leyte is now relying on the financial support of the provincial government, the annual dues of its members, special fund raising projects and donations from concerned individuals. Proceeds from these sources however are hardly enough to cover the salaries of chapter personnel, training of trainors, and its camping activities.

We are therefore requesting concerned Southern Leytenos here and abroad who want to help sustain the girls scout movement to send their donations to the GSP Southern Leyte Council’s savings account number 6130089863 at the Banko De Oro branch in Maasin, Southern Leyte.

Donors may rest assured that any amount they give will be accounted for and go a long way in the value formation of our young girls.

Our girl scouts need our help. Let’s not allow this best value inhancing movement to disappear into obscurity.
