INSPECTING THE RUNWAY

Airport by 2019?

March 18 - 24, 2017

MAASIN CITY - Decades after it's inaugural groundbreaking in the mid- 1990s, the provincial airport project located in Barangay Panan-awan, Maasin City seems to find closure as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is planning to finish the airport project by the year 2019.

Department of Transportation Director of Project Management Services Eduardo Mangalili disclosed to the press that the airport is on track for completion this coming 2019 during a press conference held last March 20.
Mangalili said that as of now they are still in the process of removing airport obstructions, repairing the runway apron and ramp, as what is being required by airline companies Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines before they consider and plan to ply the Maasin City route.

“We need more developments on this project and, hopefully, we can have the inaugural flight this 2019,” the director said.

The DOTC is proposing an additional P122 million for next year (2018) to address the other needed projects for the airport to be operational such as: extension of the runway, installing a flight service station and an airport control tower.

For many years, residents have been criticizing the slow-paced completion of the Panan-awan airport. “We urged the public to understand the delay in construction since the project is in a multi-year basis funding and we also have to consider weather conditions.” Mangalili ended.(By MARK L.
