Administrator Aquino at odds with NFA Council

March 11 - 17, 2017

QUEZON CITY - Newly appointed National Food Authority (NFA) Administrator Jason Laureano Aquino is at odds with the NFA Council over the system of rice importation.

Aquino, who is a Maasinhon, is facing serious allegations by some members of the agency’s council after his reported defiance of the council’s orders.

In a press interview, Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco alleged that Aquino’s disregard of the council’s decision to extend rice importations under the Minimum Access Volume (MAV) scheme has put the country’s food security at risk.

MAV refers to the volume of a specific agricultural product that is allowed to be imported with lower trade tariffs.

Evasco reiterated that Aquino’s further refusal to carry out the council’s decision would subject him to disciplinary actions.

Meanwhile, Jason Aquino said in a statement that extending the MAV importation by a month might open the floodgates to rampant rice smuggling.(By MARK L. RIMAS)
