400 College Scholarships

MAASIN CITY - The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) - Maasin Branch is now accepting applications for its college scholarship program for school year 2017-2018 to children or dependents of persons with disabilities, indigenous people, and single parents of its active members and pensioners.

The government insurance agency is offering a total of 400 scholarship slots to members and permanent total disability (PTD) pensioners with the lowest annual basic salary.

According to Staff Officer II Gabriel Roxas, college scholarship can be availed of up to June 9, 2017.

“The scholarship program aims to help the deserving and underprivileged earn
a college degree from schools that provide quality education,” Roxas said.

Under the scholarship program, the agency does not only accept incoming college freshmen but also those already in higher college levels taking up 4-or 5- year identified priority courses in a school qualified by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

Among the schools in Region 8 accredited for the scholarship are Eastern Visayas State University, Leyte Normal University and Visayas State University.
Universities in Cebu such as University of San Carlos, University of San Jose- Recoletos, Cebu Doctors University, University of the Visayas, Cebu Normal University and University of the Philippines are also qualified.

Active members who have qualified children or dependents may apply for the program if they are permanent employees of the government for at least three years with a salary grade of 24 or below and have already paid premium contributions for the last six months.

Aside from shouldering the actual cost of tuition and miscellaneous fees not exceeding P40, 000 per academic year, the GSIS has also raised the scholar's monthly allowance to P3,000.

Monetary incentives in the amount of P20,000, P30,000, and P50,000 also await scholars who will graduate with Latin honors – Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude respectively.
